Initially, this notion was exclusively related to BBS. However, as the Internet spreads, there have been many sites that are quite similar to the usual domestic bulletin boards or advertising newspapers. They inherited the name of the electronic bulletin boards (but BBS abbreviations are rarely used for such Russian-speaking resources). Their contents are a set of commercial and/or non-commercial declarations and are posted on both a fee and free basis, depending on the site. Many advertising companies with paper publications and television and radio workshops also establish and maintain their own electronic bulletin boards.

Principles of work

An electronic bulletin board is functionally similar to an ordinary site where everyone wants to sign their announcement and all visitors to the site read it. The electronic bulletin board is generally divided into several thematic sections according to the content of the announcements.

Most electronic boards are free. In order to post his announcement, the user only needs to introduce in a special form his subject, his name/pseudonym or the name of the organization, as well as the coordinates: e-mail address, postal address, telephone, URL of his site, etc. (the data collection depends on a specific resource). In general, only the names of the authors and the topics of the announcement are displayed, and in order to look at the full text of the announcement, the user must click on the reference leading to it. In some boards, only registered users can be advertised, in some cases all. There are thousands and even tens of thousands of ads on the Internet. Usually, each of them is devoted to a separate type of announcement. There are national bulletin boards for residents of a particular area.
